Freewaytopia: How Freeways Shaped Los Angeles Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris D -- Monorail! Monorail! : I love books like this. The author takes something we pay little attention to and covers it in a way which will make sure that we will see it in a completely different way. Pair this with the book “Traffic” and a new mindset is in the making. Pay no attention to the reviews here whining about white guilt. The author merely tells the story like it happened. Some people are uncomfortable with facts and prefer “alternative facts” so the don’t have to examine their own world views. Thinking is hard. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Taub -- An Original Slice of Los Angeles History For Angelinos : As an native Encino lad growing up in the 70's, the freeways were cool. We didn't take buses, the red cars were but remnants of rail and overgrowth, and we were intrinsically linked with our parents, family, and friends in our sedans, convertables, station wagons ("woodies") to that web of freeway. I think the majority of our family conversations were in a car, on a freeway, where the journey was greater than the destination at times. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Grimlik -- Good info, but tries to instill white guilt : Not interested AT ALL in the author's personal guilt towards native Americans and minorities, much more interested in the facts about freeways. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Scott Johnson -- Very factual, but sometimes read like an editorial. : I grew up in the same era as the author, pouring over Auto Club and Thomas Guide maps in my youth, and have been a student of the LA Freeway system for over 40 years. The author certainly know his freeways and I have learned quite a bit from his insight. His sidebar bits of trivia, on almost every page, certainly added to my enjoyment. That being said, the author certainly like to inject politics into his writing, basically that the white man is bad and all immigrants or low income people are victims. It became very tiring. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SuziL -- Super interesting! A fun, fascinating (and very well researched) trip through LA's freeway history : Having driven LA's freeways for over 20 years myself, there were 2 big things which surprised me about this book.
